The older class continued to work on their science fiction stories. Today they created a believable character that is the hero of their story. The details they were to include about their hero are:
What does he/she look like?
What gets them excited & afraid?
What's this person's best trait, and worst?
How does this person respond to authority?
Who else is in their life, and how do they relate to the character?
What's their biggest problem and greatest wish?
Once they finished developing the character they started their story. The plan is to either drop their character into their new world or have something happen in their world that gets their character moving. The world they are in has a problem that the character is involved in. For homework they can either solve the problem, leave us with a cliffhanger or write the prologue to the story. If writing a prologue it can be written in 3rd person, but the story itself needs to be written in 1st person.
In the younger class we had a great time talking about fairy tales; how they have changed over time and how they teach a lesson. We played a game of fairy tale mad libs to help get our creative juices flowing. Then each student wrote (or will write for homework) their own version of a fairy tale with a twist, I gave them each a different lesson that their story had to teach the reader.
If your child was absent the lesson they can use for their fairy tale is "I learned that it feels good to help other".
