How To Write a Screenplay

This week we have become screenplay writers, directors, and producers. We will be working on these plays for the next few weeks, ending with all the students acting in each others plays. The homework this week is to finish 1-4 on the list below. We will work on 5-7 in class next week. All work must be typed and each actor will need a copy of the finished script.

How To Write a Screenplay

1. Pick a title for the play or movie. The title must be original, can not borrow from a favorite movie or book.
2. List your characters; focus on creating good characters, not lots of them. Remember your actors will be students in the class, so you will need to work with who is available and willing.
3. Write a paragraph about each character- include their looks, personality, likes and dislikes, feelings, etc. A paragraph is five to seven sentences; make sure you develop believable characters that your actors can relate to.
4. Pick a setting. Does your play take place in a factory, a park? Is it rainy or sunny? Details are important. Write down every time something changes in the scene and when the scene changes entirely.
5. Write the lines. Make the lines fit your characters. Make sure that your play isn't bland or boring. Be creative! Give stage directions within your script, so that your characters know what they should do and when.
6. Ask people to be in your play or movie.
7. Perform it! You can bring in props if you need them. Please make sure your parents know that they don't have to buy anything, use stuff that you already have or borrow.

Parents are welcome to come and watch the plays on May 7 and 8. If we don't get through all of them we will continue the performances on May 14 and 15.
