HOW TO PERSUADE YOUR PARENTS

We all decided that we have never convinced our parents to change a rule or give us more screen time, or more allowance by whining or giving our opinion on the subject.  We decided that they only way we might get some of the changes we want are through persuasion.  So today, we learned how to write a persuasive essay.

First, you must know your audience; are you trying to persuade a parent?  A teacher?  Your friends? Or society?  You must tailor your writing to your audience.

Second, you must choose a position and prepare for the opposition.  That is way you must present at least three reasons why the rule should be changed.

Third, all arguments must be backed up with research.

Fourth, do not state your opinion; we already know that will not change your parents mind.

Fifth, restate your point; a little repetition helps drive your argument home.   

All persuasive essays will need to be five paragraphs.  

We are going to read them next week to a panel of parents or older siblings; if they have written it well enough to persuade the panel then each student will get five tickets for their hard work.
