We all know that a sentence has a person, place or thing doing something. A basic sentence looks like this: The bug looked at the spider. This week we worked on taking a basic sentence and making it longer and better. We learned that adjectives are very important in helping paint a picture for our readers. Using adjectives our boring sentences came alive. My hum-drum sentence now looks like this: The spider-eating bug looked at the hungry spider.
Then we pulled out the 50 sentences, that each student keeps with them and brings to class each week. They choose their weakest sentence from the first 10 on the list and rewrote it. They are now using that sentence to write a story for homework.
