Cinquains

SQUIRRELS
Flying
Gathering nuts
You are like monkeys there
Swinging from trees covered by leaves
Each fall.

TRASH TRUCK
Smelly
Like a sneaker
Stinking up my bedroom
You make me fell nauseous and slow
Go home.

These two poems are Cinquains. Today we worked on writing a few of our own using descriptive words to paint a picture for our readers. I passed around pictures that the students used to write their poems, they had to explain what was going on in the scene.
We also learned about syllables, cinquains are based on the use of syllables.

The first line has 2 syllables
Second line has 4
Third line has 6
fourth 8
and fifth 2 again.

This was a fun project and really stretched everyone in their ability to tell a story in a poem form, from a picture. For every cinquain the scholars write this week they can earn a ticket as long as they stick to the rules of the poem.
