How to Turn Your Life Into Great Fiction

Lots of students claim nothing interesting has ever happened to them, but that’s just not true. Students made a list of everything that has happened in your life so far. This list could include funny things, sad times, happy moments, mile stones.  As they looked over their list I asked them which one brought up the most emotion: good, bad, happy, sad, etc. They then choose the one they felt the strongest about, and wrote a paragraph about that experience. 

Next we transformed the true event into really compelling fiction. This is writing, not reporting, so we can make things up. We don’t let truth get in the way of a good story.  This was their opportunity to live out the fantasy, to let the story end the way they wanted it to. 

The assignment is to finish writing their story and re-write it. I love it when their finished product is typed, but I will take a nice hand written product as well.
