Detectives have an eagle eye for detail, so we played a game that involved a tray of 20 items that everyone got to examine for a minute. Then they had to write down everything that they remembered seeing on the tray.
Detectives also solve mystery's; so we played a games with an investigator trying to figure out who was controlling the movements for all the other students.
Then we read a story "Is the Principal Calling?"; we made predictions about how the story would end and who was behind the prank.
Finally we were ready to write our own mystery. Everyone thought of a crime that they wanted to write about, picked a detective to solve the case, came up with a setting, and three suspects who all had a motive to commit the crime. Of course all mystery's need clues and a red herring or two to throw the reader off.
Most students will need to finish writing their mystery at home and then either rewrite it in their nicest handwriting or type it.
