We are off to a great new start this semester. Over the next few months each student will be working on their own adventure novel. This week we are working on creating a relatable hero and working on character development in general.
We started out making a list of all the people we know and then we wrote one physical trait about them, how they act, finally how we feel being around that person.
We also pretended we were alone in an elevator. One other person came in- someone completely different than ourselves and we had to describe them.
I handed out the following questions for the students to finish and type at home:
Week One:
What kind of story will you be writing about?
What 3 stories are similar in some way to this one?
1.
2.
3.
Write a one paragraph story starter:
The
Hero
Age of hero:
Boy or girl?
What things do you see your Hero doing?
1.
2.
3.
Write down a few things you already know about your
Hero:
Physical Traits
Personality Quirks
Background information (social status, hometown,
family)
Does you Hero have any special powers?
What virtue does you Hero embody?
What character trait does the Hero demonstrate that
might often seem negative?
What undeserved misfortune has the Hero suffered?
How might your Hero show:
Humility?
Courage?
Humor?
Morality?
Anger?
Sorrow?
In one sentence, what does your hero want most?
In one sentence, what is standing in his/her way?
What secret is your Hero hiding?
What’s your Hero willing to fight for?
What’s your Hero willing to die for?
What one thing do I not want to happen to this
character?
These questions are designed to help the student to get to know their main character as well as figure out what kind of adventure novel they want to write. We will talk about this more next week as well.
