Hamburger Essay

This week we learned how to write a five paragraph persuasive essay. I used the metaphore of a hamburger to break down the directions. The two buns are the beginning and ending paragraphs, with the three paragraphs in the middle, acting as the lettuce, cheese, and meat. We learned that the reader doesn't care that much about our opinion and that we need to with facts, examples and details. The essay format is as follows:

1.     Introductory Paragraph (top bun)
1.     Begin with an attention grabber!  Make me want to read more.
2.     State your subject and be clear about your intention in writing about it.
3.     Give your three reasons that support your argument.
4.     State your opinion in just a sentence or two.
2.     Development Paragraph (lettuce)
1.     Restate reason #1 from the intro.
2.     Write sentences that give examples and details that support reason #1.
3.     Development Paragraph (cheese)
1.     Restate reason #2 from the intro.
2.     Write sentences that give examples and details that support reason #2.
4.     Development Paragraph (meat)
1.     Restate reason #3 from the intro.
2.     Write sentences that give examples and details that support reason #3.
5.     Concluding Paragraph (bottom bun)
1.     Restate the subject of your essay.
2.     Summarize how your reasons support your point of view.
3.     Conclude with a summary of your opinion.
4.     Leave the reader wanting to take action (Call for Action) or thinking about changing their opinion.

The essay we worked on in class was: A National Holiday Should be made in Honor of My Hero. The "Hero" is the hero of their action novel; we are still working on character development. The homework is to finish the essay and type it. They can also bring in their finished essay for South Sutter (if they are with that school) next week and I will look it over for them.
