Circular reasoning is an argument which says A is true because B
is true, and B is true because A is true. We have learned how to watch for it
and avoid it in our reasoning.
Today we had fun
with character development. We built a well rounded character and then killed
him off. We started by giving our character a name, age, eye color, hair color,
size, other characteristics, virtues, flaws, and what would you find in their garbage
can. Then we wrote about our character's morning rituals, what they would do
every morning. After that we drew a sketch of our character's house
and surrounding area. Then the students wrote a scene that happened in the
house or surrounding area. The trick to this paragraph is that it had to start
with either sentence 7 (from the 15 sentences they wrote a few weeks ago) or a
sentence that I gave them which was: "Nobody has ever loved me as much as
I've loved them." Before they could kill off their character they had to
write an obituary. We discussed that an obituary gives an over view of the
person’s life in just a few sentences. An example that I used was:
"Neighbors never complained about Mary Martin's overgrown yard; they knew
she was too busy with her charity work to devote much time to such trivial
things.” Finally the students got to retire their character. Overall a fun lesson while learning
to build a character that is believable. Next week these characters will go on
an adventure.
We are up to 150 words in Greek and Latin. We will take a break
from learning new words for two weeks; this will give everyone time to really eternalize
these words.
