Last Day of class!

We made it! This school year is coming to a close and what a fun year we have had!

The older class wrote amazing novels. Last week we enjoyed a party to celebrate their hard work. This week we talked about following their dreams and accomplishing great things while they are young. We watched a video by Prince Ea- EVERYBODY DIES, BUT NOT EVERYBODY LIVES. It is a great motivational message about doing the hard work to follow your dreams.

In both classes we wrote about our fantasy summer vacation. First we talked about vacations we don't want to go on: a mosquito farm, darning sock camp, snake infested forest, etc. Then we talked about out of this world vacations. Everyone wrote about their most amazing summer ever, we shared them at the end of class.

I hope that everyone has a wonderful summer and I hope to see you at Love of Learning in September.

Story Starters and a Loud Applause

Today we celebrated in the older class; their hard work paid off with some fabulous stories! Each student talked about their story to the class, then we took sometime to read them. After that we planned a writing game and ate a lot of treats. It was a good day!

In the younger class each student received the beginning of a story, they had to write the ending. Then they shared their creative endings with the class. There is no homework this week.

Celebrate Good Times!/ Scattergories

I'm so impressed with the older class' novels. Parents if you haven't read your child's story you really need to; they have worked hard and it shows. Next week we will celebrate with a party in class. Everyone is going to bring in a treat to share and we will read a section from each story. Students must bring their completed work with a cover and title page.

In the younger class we played Scattergories. These kids love this game! It's a great way to get them thinking fast and creatively, it also helps sharpen their skills.

Two weeks left of this school year, it has gone by so fast! I have loved teaching these two classes; my favorite part about teaching is watching the growth of each student. Thank you for the opportunity to work with your children.

All Good Things Must Come to an End/ Interpretive Dancing

Our novels are just about finished in the older writing class. Next week students will turn in their final chapter for me to go over. The following week their entire book is due (May 3) and we will have a party. They all want to bring in snacks and play writing games.

We ended up getting shipwrecked in the younger writing class today. Each student had the chance to get up and perform, without words, their story; thus an interpretive dance. The class tried to guess what the story was all about. I think most of the students enjoyed the chance to act out their harrowing tales of survival. There is no homework this week.

Finish the Race and Spy Stories

In the older writing class we discussed how and when to finish a story. We talked about all the different ways a story can end and how to know when you are done. Then we did an exercise to help them get comfortable writing endings. Their final chapters are due next week, no excuses!

In the younger class we continued our spy school program; teaming up with a partner to solve a crime by using everything in our spy kits. If they didn't finish their story in class it is homework.

Spy Mission Game

Welcome back! I missed everyone over the break.

Today we had fun playing a spy game that I made up over the break. They started off with a spy assignment and then they rolled the dice to see what adventures awaited them as they traveled through the game. They used tools from their spy kits to help them solve clues and to get out of scary situations.

The older class enjoyed being my guinea pigs; they were the first ones to play the spy game. We also went over their stories. This week they need to revise their work and get ready to write the final chapter; which we will start next week.

The younger classes homework is to build some sort of spying device that they will present to the class next week. They also need to bring their spy kits; they will be going on an adventure with a partner and can only use the things they packed in their kit.

Chapter 4 and Spy School

It was so wonderful to see my students again today!
In the older class we are starting chapter 4; this chapter needs to include the climax of their stories. The good news is they have two full weeks to write it. Today we talked about not putting our readers to sleep and getting over writer's block.
In the younger class we started Spy School, it takes a lot of work to become a top notch spy. We focused on decoding today and we learned three codes.

The homework is to write a friend a letter in code, make sure to include the key to the code.
When we come back to class in two weeks they need to bring a spy tool kit with them. They should work on it over the break and be as creative as possible. The toolkit can be a simple as a box of cereal filled with things they need to do their job as a spy.
Have a fabulous Easter!
